About the Farm Blue Heron Farm was born in 2006. We took over a small property that had previously been used as graze and hay land and began the short-term process of converting it to a functional dairy as well as the much longer term process of reverting it to a more sustainable and naturally fertile parcel of land. We use organic
and sustainable principles in the management of both land and livestock
and and all decisions made on our farm go through a three-tier
Adhering to these principles necessitates a small herd and takes significantly more daily care and operating capital than conventional systems, but we see it as the future of agriculture and would not farm any other way. We use our
farm as a teaching tool for children and for people of all ages interested
in taking part in our food system, either as more educated consumers or
as more responsible producers. About the Farmers
Christian was born and raised in Houston, Texas. The misspent portions of his youth were largely related to punk rock and/or skateboarding. He grew up loving music and eventually working in the industry. Prior to goat farming, Christian was a touring sound engineer, most recently for a popular country singer. His live concert work took him to Australia, Japan, Western Europe and all over the North American continent. Toward the end of his career, he was on the road some 250 plus days a year, and always dreamed about retiring and having goats. After a particularly long touring year, and only two years into his AWESOME marriage, his loving wife, Lisa, let him retire. The farm and goats followed shortly thereafter.
Christian is in charge of all things mechanical at the farm and most of the really tough animal husbandry work. He trims hooves, assists in births, disbuds, tattoos and almost always carries the heavy feed bags. He is also our CEO guy.
Lisa was born in Minnesota, but grew up in a few different places, as a military brat. Her family settled in San Antonio when she was 10, so she tells people shes a Texan. Lisas past career choices include Greeting Card Writer, Financial Services Marketing Manager and a couple other jobs she really never took to. An avowed city girl, Lisa was eventually wooed out to the country by her foodie passions. She is head cheese maker, though Christian can make a mean chevre, too.
Lisa is
in charge of feeding the non-goat animals at BHF, as well as attempting
to grow the familys vegetables. She is also the one who has to give
the goats their shots. Pretty funny
shes very needle-phobic.
Lisa is in charge of marketing. Its the least she can do with her
fancy Advertising degree from UT.
